Introduction to Programming 9bCS

LO: To develop an understanding of what a programming language is and why they are used.

Starter
In a blog post write down as many programming languages as YOU have heard of. Be honest.

Main
What are programming languages?
What are they used for?
Why is there more than 1 programming language?
What are the 5 most popular languages?

We are going to be learning Python.
What can you find out about Python?
Who uses it and why?

As preparation for next lesson create the following basic programs in Scratch. You need to save them in H\Sites\Computer Science\Scratch Coding.
You will need these files for the next few lessons.

1. Get Scratch to print the phrase "Hello World". 
2. Create a random number generator for numbers 1 to 100.
3. A random name picker (create an array of 6 names that it can pick from)

Use the internet to help you if you are stuck or try writing the steps out in full English

In your blog post, write down what you found difficult in creating the Scratch files.

9b Application ad System software

LO: To be able to identify and understand the purpose of utility programs.
LO: To understand the differences between off the shelf and custom written software as well as their advantages and disadvantages.

Starter:
In a new blog post - 
What is a computer virus and what do they do?
How does anti-virus software work?


Main:
What is spyware and what does it do?

What is a Firewall and what does it do?

Find the definitions for the terms off the shelf software and custom written software.
Create a table of at least 3 advantages and disadvantages for both.

EXT:
Find some examples of viruses and spyware and describe what they did.

Plenary:
Who is most likely to use which software and why?

9bCS Operating System

LO: To understand what an Operating System is and why they are needed.

Starter:
How many operating systems can you name?
Write them in a blog post.
Insert their logos in to your blog post.

Main:
Define what an operating system is.

1. User Interface
What is a user interface?
What does GUI stand for?
Why do we need a user interface?

2. Management
How does the operating system deal with memory management?
How does it deal with hardware management?

Plenary:
Get your partner to read your blog post. They will comment on the post giving 2 stars and a wish on how your work is presented and the level of detail provided.


Period 5
LO: To research the differences between the Windows and Mac user interfaces.

Starter:
You will be put in pairs. As log in to the MAC side of your machine. Bs the Windows side.

Main:
You are going to write a formal comparison of Windows' and the Mac's user interfaces.

How do they differ?
How are they similar?
Are there any issues with either of them?

Which do you prefer and why?
Is one more suited to a particular task than the other? Why?

Plenary:
Read your comparison to the rest of the class.

9n1 Design Logs

LO: To understand what a design log is and how to use them to gain a high mark.

Starter:
Read the passages below - 

Design log 
Students are required to use a design log to show the development of a design 
from initial ideas to finished product. They should also show how testing, acting 
on feedback and refining their designs influenced the finished product.

Characters
Students may choose any suitable 3D characters that will represent the game. 
There must be one hero and one villain and the completed 3D characters must 
be freestanding. 
In addition to the vector drawing, students must produce photographs showing 
the finished characters from different angles. These will be used in the mobile 
phone wallpaper, and may be used on the trading cards and the trading card box 
but are NOT required for the assessment of strand (a). 

  • For 3 marks, a student may have needed guidance, but must have used vector tools to produce some elements that demonstrate limited awareness of audience and purpose. 
  • For 5 marks, a student may have needed limited guidance, but must have used vector tools to develop some elements that demonstrate some awareness of audience and purpose. 
  • For 7 marks, a student must have worked independently and used vector tools to develop elements that meet most of the requirements and demonstrate reasonable awareness of audience and purpose. 
  • For 9 marks, a student must have worked independently and used vector tools to develop elements that meet most of the requirements and demonstrate good awareness of audience and purpose. 
Main:
Today you are starting your character design logs.
Photograph your net flat then build it and photograph it built from different angles.
