Starter:
What is a graphics card and what does it do?
What does it plug in to?
What is a sound card and what does it do?
What does it plug in to?

Graphics - 
What is a bitmap image?
Give example file types.
What is a pixel?


The resolution of an image is expressed as the number of pixels by row by the number 
of pixels per column.
An image with a resolution of 1024 by 798 pixels has 1024 x 798 pixels (817,152 pixels). 

The colour of each pixel is stored as a binary pattern in memory.
In a monochrome screen (two colours) just 1 bit will be needed for each pixel:
0 for white 
1 for black
If 2 bits are used for each pixel then four colours can be stored for example:
00 - White 
01 - Blue
10 - Red
11 - Black

Task - 
How many colours can be stored using a 3-bit code? 
Write out the combinations.
How many colours can be stored using an 8-bit code? 
How many colours can be stored using a 16-bit code? 

What is a vector image?
Give example file types.

Sound - 
What is an MP3 file?
What is a WAV file?
Are there any differences? If so what?

9bCS RAM and ROM

LO: To understand the difference between RAM and ROM and be able to explain what they are.


Starter:
A new coding club - This will help with your coursework next year.
Take a look here.

Main:
You are going to create a poster about RAM and ROM.
You may use any software of your choosing but you must be able to justify your choice.

REMEMBER - This is a poster. It needs to be visually appealing as well a informative.
Poster size A4.

You need to include the following information:


  1. What do the letters stand for?
  2. What type of memory is ROM?
  3. What type of memory is RAM?
  4. How do they differ?
  5. What does the term volatile memory mean?
  6. What is the difference between static RAM and dynamic RAM?


Give some examples of everyday technological devices and the size of the RAM or ROM inside them.

LO: To understand that there are different ways of storing data and that the chosen method depends on a number of factors.

Starter:

Match the terms with the correct definition. Write the answers in a blog post.

Main:
Task 1 - 
Research some examples of internal and external storage devices.
List those examples.
Give an advantage and disadvantage for both internal and external storage devices.

Task 2 - 
What is a hard disk?

Briefly describe how do they work.

Task 3 - 
What is online storage?
Research some examples and explain why people may choose to use them instead of offline storage.

Why do we have internal and external storage?
What factors do the type of storage we use depend on?

Main:
How do we make a cup of tea?

When told to, click here for the Gliffy Flowchart software.
Create a chart for making a cup of tea.

Take a print screen of your flow chart, insert it in to Fireworks.
Crop it.
Save the image as a JPG then insert it in to your blog.

EXT:
Can you create a flow chart for testing Sky plus. 
(Set up a programme to record on sky plus, the programme actually recording and then playing it.)

Can you name the symbols?
